Nokia Gives Wibree Away to Bluetooth

Good news for anyone suffering from premature cellphone battery death. Nokia is folding its Wibree ultra low power wireless technology into Bluetooth. Wibree will be adopted for a new low power Bluetooth standard now that an agreement has been reached by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Carlaw added that Wibree is a wildcard in the development and growth of this market. "While Wibree is interesting and may have significant potential," he says, "it is still very new, and the jury remains out on the question of whether it can make significant inroads in the wireless HID market."

Bluetooth competitor emerges at CES

Now a series of new contenders for the same frequency band have emerged, including Kleer Audio LP and at the end of last year Nokia's WiBree technology, with lower power consumption cited as a major advantage in both cases.
